On February 17, 2014, in the Samtredia Public School No. 1 and, on February 18, in the Zestaphoni Public School No. 2, Georgian Democracy Initiative held discussions about tolerance and the prohibition of discrimination. The discussions were led by a lawyer of Georgian Democracy Initiative (GDI), Giorgi Mshvenieradze, and philosopher Levan Ghambashidze.
The aim of the meetings was to hold discussions in Georgia’s regions on such issues as the prohibition of discrimination, tolerance, and secularism as a principle of state governance. The discussion participants talked about the situation that exists in this region and in Georgia in general in terms of tolerance, minority rights, and the mechanisms of their protection.
The meetings were attended by leaders and mentor teachers of the clubs of civic education in the schools of Samtredia and Zestaphoni, pupils of graduating classes, teachers, and common citizens. It should be noted that such discussions were held for the first time in Samtredia and Zestaphoni. The teachers of civic education pointed out that such discussions would contribute to the raising of awareness of the culture of tolerance and civic consciousness among youth.
The discussions were held in the framework of the “Support to the Advancement of Human Rights in Georgia” project which is funded by the government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
