“The legal state and freedom of assemblies and manifestations” – trainings held by Georgian Democracy Initiative in western Georgia

On November 4-7, 2014, Georgian Democracy Initiative held trainings on the topic of “The legal state and freedom of assemblies and manifestations” in four cities of western Georgia. The main goal of the trainings was to raise young people’s consciousness of the principles of the legal state and human rights and freedoms.

The trainings were held in the framework of the “Improvement of tolerance, religious freedom and human rights in Georgia” project which is being implemented with the funding of the Human Rights Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The trainings were led by a specialist of human rights law, Giorgi Mshvenieradze.

The participants of the trainings paid special attention to the principles of the legal state and discussed the constitutional standard of Georgia and the practice of the Constitutional Court of Georgia in relation to the right to hold assemblies and manifestations, as well as the importance of the right and the area protected by the Constitution, freedom of assemblies and manifestations as a collective right, etc.

On November 4, the training was held in the Democratic Engagement Center of Kutaisi and involved students of Akaki Tsereteli State University of Kutaisi, as well as pupils of the 11th and 12th grades of public schools no. 2, 15, 9, and 41 of Kutaisi and the public school of the village of Kvitiri.

On November 5, the training was held in Zugdidi, in the Community Development Center. The training participants included students of Shota Meskhia State Teaching University of Zugdidi and pupils of graduating classes of public schools no. 1 and 7 of Zugdidi.

On November 6, the training was held in the town of Ozurgeti, in the Leadership School based in the office of the Young Teachers’ Union. The participants of the training included pupils of public schools no. 1, 2, and 3 of the town of Ozurgeti, St. Nino Parish School, and Bishop St. Gabriel Parish School, as well as pupils of senior grades of public schools of the villages of Melekeduri, Ozurgeti, Gurianta, Laituri, Tskhemliskhidi, and Likhauri.  

 

On November 7, the series of trainings were completed in Batumi, in the House for Free Journalists. The participants of the training included students of Shota Rustaveli University of Batumi, as well as pupils of the 11th and 12th grades of public schools no. 1, 2, 6, and 8 and private school “Mediana 2011”.
