GDI Statement on the investigated case of the distribution of the recordings of private life

GDI welcomes the completion of the investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs on the case of distribution of video recordings of Giorgi Faresishvili’s private life. In parallel we consider that the Ministry must continue and finalize the investigation to prosecute all persons who might have a link with the abovementioned crime.

We also welcome the statement of the Minister to destroy the archive containing the materials of private life of citizens. We hope that this procedure will be implemented timely with active participation of human rights organizations.

As this and other facts have proved Georgian legislation on personal data protection requires serious revision to prevent such facts in the future. We consider that the Parliament of Georgia and the Government should pay special attention to this process. In addition we consider that the Criminal code of Georgia requires changes for increasing the criminal responsibility for similar crimes.
