As the public knows from the information released by official agencies, on May 13, 2013, 24-year-old prisoner Levan Kortava was cruelly beaten in the Geguti penal institution, which resulted in his death on May 23 of the same year. The report on human rights and freedoms of the first part of 2013
GDI is pleased to present the Report on the Situation of Human Rights and Freedoms in Georgia for the first half of 2013. The present report covers the events that took place in the first half of 2013 and are related to the issues of human rights and observance of the rule of law. At the same time, the report includes several cases that do not fall within the reporting period, but, due to their significance, we have deemed it necessary to discuss these issues in the format of the present report.

The opinions of the GDI regarding the draft law “On Amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure”
On July 4, 2013, the government of Georgia submitted the draft law “On Amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure of Georgia” for the consideration of the Parliament of Georgia. The aforementioned draft law amends Article 332 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Georgia and provides that the new procedure of interrogation which only allows the interrogation of a witness before a court will take effect from December 1, 2014, instead of September 1, 2013.
